In verses 32 and 33 Jesus asks the Jews what work they are stoning him for, and they reply that they aren’t stoning him for his works, but for his words. This really brings out the fact that it was not Jesus’s works that were at issue—they wanted more signs! But the problem was that they did not like the truth that Jesus spoke. It was his words that offended them. They did not want to hear of God’s own Son come to save men from this evil world and open their eyes spiritually. They were willing to ask if he was the Christ—but they would not accept him when he declared that he was the Christ who was also the holy Son of God.
